Key questions to ask your insurance adviser
An insurance adviser can be an invaluable asset to help you navigate the wide array of personal risk products available to financially protect you, and those you love.
We can help you make sure you get the right cover in place to financially secure what matters to you, and – perhaps even more importantly – make sure the cover stays relevant over time.
If you are thinking about meeting an adviser for the first time, or it’s time for a check-up, here are a few key questions you may want to ask.
What type of insurance do I need?
There are lots of different types of personal insurance available and what might be a good fit for one person isn’t necessarily right for another. We can help you understand your current situation, what’s important to you, and what your financial goals are. From there, we can then offer advice on the types of policies that might be a good fit.
Which insurer is appropriate for me and why?
As insurance advisers, we work with a range of insurers, so we get a good sense of what’s available in the market. Depending on your needs, some insurers may be more appropriate than others, and we will explain in detail why we think that’s the case.
Which policy is right for my needs?
There are a lot of different insurance types and policies available, and we can help you identify those that are more likely to be suitable for your circumstances. But it doesn’t end there. Over time your life will change, and so may your insurance needs: that’s why we recommend reviewing your cover once a year, or more often if there have been changes in your personal or financial situation.
What exclusions might apply to me?
Depending on your current health status, you may find that an insurer will apply some exclusions, perhaps for pre-existing conditions. We can talk you through how this works and what you could expect. This is also worth talking about at review time, because not all exclusions have to remain in place forever.
What will my premiums be?
It’s important that your cover fits within your budget so that it remains affordable and sustainable. We can help ensure that you’re only paying for the cover you need. When it comes time for a review of your situation and covers, we can also discuss how you might expect your premiums to change as you get older, and whether it’s worth thinking about options such as level cover to avoid that.
Are there any benefits I don’t know about?
Some policies come with benefits that you might not be aware of. We can talk through these with you – sometimes there’s an option to add on something which might be suitable for your situation and needs, such as adding dental cover to your health insurance, or increasing your life cover without further underwriting at a certain point in time.
What could I expect at claim time?
As insurance advisers, a big part of our job is also helping clients with their claims, including assisting with the paperwork and liaising with the insurer on your behalf. And if you’re unsure whether an event is claimable or not – we can walk you through the details of your policy, whenever you need us to.
